Move identification is not the same as pattern identification.
On the surface Damien Maia and BJ Penn both use the exact same passes, (1) mount from 3/4 Mount and (2) Dope Mount/Leg Weave. However one would be hard pressed to say that they are the same type of guard passer. One has to draw the distinction between moves and identifying “paths”, the second being a more involved process of identifying repeated “set ups” leading up to a “move”.
I thought this BJ Penn study would be a good contrast between highlighting the difference between “moves” and “set ups”. Watch this study and then my Demian Maia series . Contrast the set up of “Chair Sitting” vs “Tripoding” to achieve the same conclusion (those 2 passes).
